ALEX Lehning
Favorite Part of Job? My favorite aspect of working in public history and archaeology is that I make the inaccessible become accessible. I help bring the past alive for museum guests and student groups, and there is something really special about sharing a story or artifact with someone that they would not have been able to experience in any other context.
Most Inspiring Mentor: I am most inspired by grandfather. He taught me that a passion for learning, service to others, and a proper disposition were the keys to a successful life.
Tell us something fun about yourself that few people know: I am a published poet, and for a time I thought I would be a writer. I love my career in the non-profit sector, but I do miss writing at times.
Favorite Downtime Activity: I play guitar and love going for hikes with my black lab, Shelby. My wife Karen and I also love to travel to concerts and new places together.
Favorite Vermont Escape: There is nothing better than a day spent playing on Lake Champlain.
Favorite Social Media: I have learned to love Facebook, because it's an important part of my job. Social media is vital for non-profits today.
Favorite Website: I am on the Vermont Public Radio website more than a few times each day.
Vermont Business Person you would most want to Network with: I would want to network with UVM President Tom Sullivan, to learn more about how to successfully manage a passion for mission with institutional sustainability.
Career Highlights: My first successful grant writing experience, which provided funding for at-risk youth to gain skills and confidence in an outdoor education program. It was a transformative experience for them, and my career as well.
Community Involvement: I am a Merit Badge Counselor with the BSA. I teach and guide Scouts who are earning their archaeology or citizenship merit badges. In addition, I am a member of the Board of Directors for the Franklin-Grand Isle United Way. We are currently working on a campaign to raise awareness about the struggles of substance abuse in our community, and to promote educational and economic opportunity for all. I am a Brother and adviser for Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity. I also volunteer my grant-writing skills to other non-profits without a development office or staff.
