Dr. Jackie Burrell

32 | Naturopathic Doctor, Avalon Natural Medicine
Residence: Chittenden

Career highlight you are most proud of.
Becoming a primary care physician in Vermont. I work with a lot of patients with chronic illnesses .We have such incredible knowledge of medicine, but have so much growth to do in integrating natural medicines with modern medicine. I take the best of what medicine has to offer and teach that to my patients.

Community involvement.
I started a nonprofit group of doctors called FINE-Health, which works to reduce the impact of environmental toxins on communities, particularly urban communities. Prior to medical school, I volunteered teaching yoga to breast cancer survivors and after-school programs. Recently, I participated on a planning committee for the integrative pain conference at UVM and guest taught teaching integrative medical topics to elementary, high school and university students.

Motivation for living and working in Vermont.
Wanting to give my skills as a naturopathic physician back to a place that helped cultivate the person I’ve grown into today. From the healing power of nature to the power of integrative medicine, my work as a naturopathic physician can really grow in an environment like Vermont.

Favorite part of your job.
Having the privilege to truly get to know my patients and help them succeed in achieving attainable health goals. It’s an honor to be in the role of physician for families and their loved ones, and I am very proud of the work that I do.

Best career advice you have received.
Trust yourself — it’s fundamental to understand the skills you have so you can utilize them to achieve your goals.

Something fun about yourself that few people know.
I play the guitar, with a particular fondness for John Prine songs. It’s a quiet passion of mine.

Favorite Vermont escape.
Ascending to the top of Camel’s Hump. The gorgeous view after working your way up the mountain through the trees is pure goodness.

Favorite downtime activity.
Hiking with my partner, Isaac, and our dog, Miles; going on a long morning run; or meditating in the sauna.

Favorite smell.
Hands down, the aroma of my fiance’s cooking. His homemade rigatoni pasta recipe is unmatched.

Career goals you would like to accomplish in the next five to 10 years.
Continue providing excellent care to my patients and expanding access to integrative medicine for underserved communities.
