Favorite Part of Job? I'm curious about a lot of things so I love that I get to learn something new every day. In six years we've never run out of ideas for Vermont Edition and I'm grateful that I get to explore them with generous experts.
Most Inspiring Mentor: Carolyn Jensen Chadwick gave me my start in public radio when she hired me straight out of college to work on "Radio Expeditions," a co-production of NPR and National Geographic. Carolyn taught me attention to detail, the power of sound, and how to find adventure in every story. And she was a wonderful friend until her death in 2010.
Tell us something fun about yourself that few people know: I've traveled or lived on every continent other than Antarctica--and someday I'll get there too!
Favorite Downtime Activity: I spend a lot of time wandering around in the woods with my dog. It's a daily opportunity to watch the seasons change.
Favorite Vermont Escape: There's nothing better than a hike up Snake Mountain in Addison County. The top offers an incredible view of Vermont farmland and the Adirondacks. At sunset it's stunning.
Favorite Social Media: I'm a fan of Instagram, a fun way to share pictures and live vicariously through others.
Favorite Website: www.vpr.net, of course!
Vermont Business Person you would most want to Network with: I would love to be a fly on the backpack of Jan Reynolds. A photojournalist, adventurer, and mountaineer, she's made a career of traveling the world and documenting it. I admire her thirst for exploration and excitement and would love to learn more about how she's been able to make a career of her passions in that way.
Career Highlights: I've been able to meet and report on a lot of pretty amazing people. But one of the most valuable moments in my career so far was being on the air in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene. We were able to expand Vermont Edition, going live three or four hours a day and providing essential information and personal connection to people stranded by the storm. It's a misnomer to call it a career "highlight." But it was a time when I felt like my work mattered and I was deeply invested in making sure we were providing a meaningful service to our listeners.
Community Involvement: Hosting a show like Vermont Edition is a great way to be involved in the community. We are part of the community discussion over some of the biggest ideas and potential changes to the state. We keep people informed and encourage them to think about the issues that affect them. Additionally, I work with a lot of students, from middle school on up, who are interested in journalism, writing, and public radio. Over the years I've also volunteered in various local charities and organizations, like a town library, a homeless shelter, and a children's hospital.
