JOSHUA Sherman, M.D.

Company: Old Mill Road Recording & Old Mill Road Media
Title: Founder/Owner/Publisher/Producer
Age: 39

Career Highlights: I am very fortunate that I can apply a core set of skills (communication skills, listening skills, being detail-oriented, organization skills, etc.) in multiple fields: THEATER (my first Broadway credit was at age 17), MEDICINE (I have been a practicing physician in VT since 2009), MUSIC, REAL ESTATE, and PUBLISHING (Vermont Magazine, Stratton Magazine, Vermont News Guide, Manchester Life).
I am extremely proud of the restoration (and re-invention) of East Arlington, Vermont.  The creative campus is home to Old Mill Road Media, Old Mill Road Recording, and The Mill.  It is a magical place where positivity, hard work, and opportunity meet.

Community Involvement: I am currently working with Benjamin Lerner - a composer (who is a recovering addict) - on a campaign to make a difference in  the opioid epidemic through music.  It is certainly a project I am proud of - and it is one in which I can utilize my combined medical knowledge, musical ability, state-of-the-art recording studio (which I designed), and my role as publisher to make a difference.

What motivated you to live and work in Vermont? I had some wonderful childhood mentors here, who encouraged me to move here in 2009 as a "young doctor".  What started as a one year contract turned into the rest of my life.

Favorite part of your job? I love bringing out the best in others - and creating positive and collaborative experiences for teams (in medicine, music, theater, construction, etc.)

Most inspiring mentor and why: My life has been defined by the mentor-protege relationship.  I was very fortunate to be groomed in the theater by several legendary Broadway artists - and then I was lucky to receive such excellent training from my college (Marymount Manhattan) and medical school (Stony Brook) professors.  I am very proud that I am now in a position to mentor others.
Ultimately - and I know it sounds cliche - my parents really are my heroes.  They not only inspired me, but they also found the right balance in preparing me for life by supporting/encouraging my goals, while also drilling in me important concepts like work ethic, stamina, determination, thoughtfulness, and a sense of “right & wrong.”

What is the best career advice you have received? “You CAN have everything in life, but not at the same time.”

Favorite Vermont escape: East Arlington was always my "runaway place."  Now it is my home.  Who needs to escape?!
That said, who doesn't love a romantic meal at Simon Pierce, a lovely day trip to the Vermont Country Store, or a fun day of antiquing in Chester?!

What one song is on your playlist that are you ashamed to tell your best friend?
I am not embarrassed by anything on my playlist! Music is music.  I love it all.

What career goal(s) would you like to accomplish in the next 5-10 years? I would love to continue to develop new projects and collaborations in a wide range of fields here in Vermont.
