MELINDA Humphrey

Favorite Part of Job: My favorite part of working at Green Mountain Power is that there is something new and exciting around every turn.  Each new role I’ve had has been strengthened by the skillsets I built in the position before it, which motivates me to keep learning.  In addition, working for a company that encourages and supports my community engagement is fulfilling.

Most Inspiring Mentor: Steve Costello instilled confidence in me both personally and professionally and motivated me to take action while engaging in my community. His encouragement and support has seen me through city council elections, tough career choices and spurred the founding of Rutland Young Professionals amongst a group of my peers.  His selflessness and non-stop energy are an example for the next generation of professionals in Rutland County, and a primary reason I call Vermont, particularly Rutland, home.

Tell us something fun about yourself that few people know: I was born in Little Rock Arkansas and moved to Massachusetts when I was in grade school.  My parents are still in Massachusetts, though the rest of my family is in the Midwest- we all congregate at my great-grandparent’s farmhouse in rural Iberia, Missouri every year on Memorial Day.

Favorite Vermont Escape: My favorite escape these days is simply a daily walk around downtown Rutland- right outside my office door.  I can make a loop around downtown, stopping for a coffee, say hi to business owners and see many friends and neighbors along the way- an instant energy and productivity boost.

Favorite downtime activity: I love to crochet.  I was inspired by an aunt, but I actually learned how from one of my college teammates on the bus on our way to a hockey game.

Where do you see yourself professionally in ten years? With the opportunities I’ve been given to learn and grow at Green Mountain Power, I can’t imagine myself anywhere else but continuing my career in the Utility industry in Vermont.  I will be further involved in conversations about energy policy and locally sourced, innovative power generation.   I will be actively engaged in my community, and still coaching youth hockey.
