Career highlight you are most proud of:
One of my proudest career achievements is assembling and nurturing a dedicated team for The People’s Farmstand and Village Hydroponics. By fostering a collaborative environment, I've helped cultivate a group of passionate individuals who are committed to our mission. This strong community support and teamwork were pivotal in launching Vermont’s first shipping container farm, Village Hydroponics. I take great pride in our team’s cohesion and the innovative strides we've made together in sustainable agriculture.
Community Involvement:
My community involvement spans across professional projects and personal passions. As the co-founder and executive director of The People’s Farmstand and Village Hydroponics, I focus on improving food access and sustainability for Burlington’s low-income and refugee populations. These initiatives not only supply fresh produce year-round but also engage community members in sustainable farming practices, fostering partnerships that enhance local food systems. Additionally, I contribute to my community as the captain of the Burlington Rugby team and as an active member of Burlington's Arab and Muslim communities, promoting cultural inclusivity and community spirit through various activities
What motivated you to live and work in Vermont?
My decision to live and work in Vermont was deeply influenced by its vibrant community values and profound connection to agriculture. Here, people genuinely look out for one another, emphasizing the importance of relationships and community over material wealth.
Favorite part of your job:
My favorite part of my job is getting to connect plants, animals, and people. Seeing humans care for the natural world, and the natural world in turn providing for us, is truly something that never gets old.
Favorite Vermont escape:
My favorite Vermont escape is biking around a small town and exploring a hidden swimming hole.
Favorite downtime activity:
My favorite downtime activity is biking to the lake (or curling up on the couch) with a good book.
If you had unlimited access to funds, which cause(s) would you support:
The cause I would support is La Via Campesina, an international movement bringing together millions of peasants, landless workers, indigenous people, pastoralists, fishers, migrant farmworkers, small and medium-size farmers, rural women, and peasant youth from around the world.
Where do you see yourself professionally in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years I'd like to become a well-respected Agricultural Technical Service Provider as well as open numerous more hydroponic community initiatives throughout Vermont.
